When you say ‘big anime,’ what does it mean?
In April, the Japanese anime studio NIS America announced that it was pulling the plug on a series that would have starred a male and female avatars and made its protagonist a lesbian.
It was the first time the company had pulled an anime series, and fans took to Twitter to vent their outrage.
“If NIS can’t make ‘big’ anime, what’s left?” wrote one user.
NIS told The Wall St. Journal that it will now focus on developing more realistic and diverse anime characters, and it will be releasing a new live-action movie in 2018.
